Senator slams poll-driven changes

MATT Canavan has described poll-driven leadership changes as "a cancer" on our political system.

The Rockhampton-based Senator made the comment yesterday while discussing the looming leadership spill motion during an appearance on Australia Agenda on Sky News.

He said the Liberal Party had the chance to clearly distinguish itself from the Labor Party today.

"I think there's a real opportunity for the Liberal Party this week to say no to the poll-driven leadership changes we've seen in the last few years," Mr Canavan said.

"I think it's terrible for our country that we have a situation where we are trying to perhaps force leadership changes in the person that leads our nation based on polling results.

"I think it's a cancer running through our whole political system that we must reject this week."

Meanwhile, Capricornia MP Michelle Landry is confident Prime Minister Tony Abbott will not be deposed.

She believes Mr Abbott is paying the price for the hard and often unpopular decisions the Federal Government has had to make in its bid to address the nation's burgeoning debt.

"Obviously, Tony Abbott's the leader and he gets blamed for everything that's happening," she said.

"We need to ride this out but once it's out of the way, we have to re-evaluate where we are heading.

"Perhaps we need to take things a little more slowly and not see reducing the debt as the be all and end all."
