Seven days and still shark haunts Newcastle beach

NEWCASTLE beaches remained closed for a record seventh consecutive day as large sharks continue to stalk the waters off the coast.

One, thought to be a great white shark, has been spotted numerous times over the past week.

Newcastle Council told ABC Online experts had advised the shark was about 5m long and was likely to weigh about 1700kg.

It comes after several massive sharks, believed to be tiger sharks, were seen feeding on dolphins off two of Newcastle's two main beaches.
