SEVERE STORM: Dangerous supercells barrel towards Coast

UPDATE 2.10PM: Three dangerous storms are barrelling towards the Sunshine Coast and are expected to hit within

minutes.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 1.55pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Beaudesert, the area southwest of Noosa Heads, Eumundi, Imbil, Cooroy, Kandanga, Woodford and Dayboro.
These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast.

They are forecast to affect Strathpine, Noosa Heads, the area west of Noosa Heads, waters off Noosa Heads, the area northwest of Noosa Heads and Amamoor by 2.25 pm and Maroochydore, Caloundra, waters off Caloundra, waters off Maroochydore, the area south of Noosa Heads and the area north of Noosa Heads by 2.55 pm.

EARLIER: Severe storms with damaging wind and large hail are zeroing in on the Sunshine Coast with the area north of Maroochydore through to Noosa likely to feel the worst of it.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Lauren Pattie said another storm was tracking slightly south east towards Caboolture with further systems likely to pass through over the next few hours.

She said there was potential for heavy falls of rain late in the day.

The BOM has detected severe thunderstorms on the weather radar near the area west of Kilcoy and Jimna.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.

They were forecast to affect Kilcoy, Kenilworth and Borumba Dam by 1:35 pm and Yandina, Imbil and Kandanga by 2:05 pm.

The BOM says damaging winds and large hailstones were likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services has advised people to move cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and to seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

A further warning wadue to be issued by 2:05 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts.
