Warwick Williams and his replica of a Maserati

Sex on wheels - 'Maserati' is a touch of Motorfest magic

WARWICK Williams can't wipe the smile from his face as he lovingly polishes the bonnet of his homemade replica 1956 250F Maserati.

"I never get tired of looking at it," he enthuses. "It's sex on wheels!"

Fulfilling a life-long dream to build his own racing car, Warwick took advantage of early retirement to begin the challenging task.

Just two years later he proudly unveiled the gleaming Monza Red Maserati in the company of family and friends.
His inspiration? Jean Behra - famous French racing car driver who raced the original No.32 Maserati in Monza, Italy, 1956.

While Behra didn't win that race he left a lasting impression on Warwick who maintains that "what he lacked in skill he made up for in courage".

Channelling Jean Behra's bravado, Warwick overcame his doubts and the many challenges that presented themselves as he was constructing the replica.

"I was halfway through building it and I thought I'd never be able to finish," Warwick said. "At one stage I thought 'this is too hard', but I persevered.

"I've had it for seven years now and the novelty of owning it hasn't worn off - I love it!"
Warwick said the replica was very close to the original, but with the addition of a seatbelt and roll bar.

"It's really nice to see the wheels when you drive - it gives you a sense of being part of the car and part of the track!"

Warwick's replica Maserati will be one of the hundreds of cars on display at RACQ MotorFest on July 13, with Earlybird Registration now open.

RACQ says its biggest annual event again promises to be a visual feast for car lovers, with this year's MotorFest celebrating 100 years of both Maserati and Dodge, as well as the 50th anniversary of Mustang.

The entry fee is $2 per person but free for children under three. All funds raised will go to the RACQ rescue helicopter network.

In addition to the impressive line-up of cars, roving entertainers, children's rides, food stalls, fresh produce and craft markets promise to keep the entire family entertained.

The details:
