Shop local in the Central Highlands and win big

TWO Central Highlands organisations have teamed together in an attempt to bring residents a happy, and local, Christmas.

The Emerald Neighbourhood Centre and the Central Highlands Regional Council have joined forces to put together a shop local promotion.

Three lucky Central Highlands shoppers will win a local shopping spree with a total value of $5000.

Emerald Neighbourhood Centre director Sherie McDonald said the shop local campaign would run alongside the annual Linking Alms appeal.

"We'll continue that tradition this Christmas, but also wanted to do something to support local business, since they are integral to the success of our communities for so many reasons," Sherie said.

Sherie said it was important to stress that the campaign was not just for Emerald businesses, but the entire Central Highlands region.

Mayor Peter Maguire said supporting local businesses benefited the entire community.

"Local businesses are the highest employers of part-time and casual employees," he said.

"This promotion is for every small to medium business in the Central Highlands region."

To enter the prize pool, $50 or more must be spent in a participating business.

Stores must register by Wednesday in order to receive their "Our Shop Our Community - Shop Local" signs and information by Saturday, November 1, when the campaign kicks off.
