Sica appeals against convictions

TRIPLE murderer Max Sica has lodged an appeal against his convictions and argued his 35-year jail sentence was "manifestly excessive".

Sica was found guilty last month of brutally murdering his former girlfriend, Neelma Singh, 24, and her siblings, Kunal, 18, and Sidhi, 12, at Bridgeman Downs on April 21, 2003.

The 42-year-old was sentenced to life in jail - 15 years in Queensland - for each of the three counts of murder, with a non-parole period of 35 years.

Sica's lawyers lodged appeal documents in Brisbane on Friday, listing 12 grounds they planned to argue.

They argued Justice Peter Lyons had erred in allowing key prosecution evidence, including a video of an emotional Sica taking police on a walkthrough of the Singh home, during a pre-trial hearing.

They also argued Justice John Byrnes's final summation to the jury at the end of the trial was "imbalanced in favour of the prosecution".

The verdict was "unreasonable and cannot be supported having regard to the evidence", the appeal read.

Sica has indicated he does not want to be present when the court hears the appeal.

No date has yet been set for a hearing in the Queensland Court of Appeal.
