Skipper Bailey wanting more from his batters

AUSTRALIA will need to improve its batting to be a major contender in next year's World Cup despite securing a 3-0 series clean sweep over Pakistan in the UAE.

That was the view of captain George Bailey, who scored just 46 runs from three innings and said the team had failed to convert starts into big partnerships.

"Nearly every game we've had some nice partnerships, we've had 70s and 80s, but we haven't ticked off a really big hundred partnership," he said. "Guys have just got to absorb the pressure and build into the innings."

Glenn Maxwell (pictured) and Steve Smith were again the stars in game three, Smith top-scoring with 77 as Australia set a gettable target of 9-231 off its 50 overs.

Pakistan seemed certain to win the game when it needed just two runs off the final over with two wickets in hand, but Maxwell produced a double-wicket maiden to get the Aussies home by one run.
