Slater helps Storm maintain its St George hoodoo
RUGBY LEAGUE: Melbourne Storm overcame a slow start and late pressure to continue its home dominance over St George with a tight 18-16 win at AAMI Park last night.
St George has lost 14 games in a row in Melbourne.
The visitors burst out of the blocks to lead 10-0 after 16 minutes.
One minute later Billy Slater showed he was glad to be back in purple after shoulder surgery with a wonderful cut-out pass to send Marika Koroibete over out wide.
Koroibete scored again and Cameron Smith added two penalty goals for Storm to lead 12-10 at the break.
The Storm scored the first try of the second spell when Ken Bromwich scored after strong work by his brother Jesse. Smith converted for an 18-10 lead.
Shortly after Tyson Frizell hit back for St George, winning the race to the ball in the in-goal. Widdop converted for 18-16.
In the last 22 minutes both teams tiring defences held tight against wave after wave of attack.
