Smart clinic needed

A GP Super Clinic in Emerald must not damage existing general practices or force an exodus of health care professionals, warned Flynn MP Ken O’Dowd.

“For the record my party does not believe in super clinics, but… we stand beside (Health Minister) Nicola Roxon in progressing these clinics,” he said.

Mr O’Dowd stressed the super clinic had to prove itself to be a sustainable business model.

With four State Government-owned sites under consideration by stakeholders interested in formulating a Central Highlands bid for the $5m funding, it is not viable to consider a commercial block of land.

Two of the sites are within the grounds of the Emerald Hospital.

Mr O’Dowd said accommodation remained a red flag issue to be addressed by health authorities “to make it work”.

“I’m saying $5m is a kick-start and we will need extra funding from other government sources in the future.”
