The red-bellied black snake is one of Australia’s most venomous snakes.

A SYDNEY fruit worker received the shock of his life after he unpacked a box of eggplants shipped from Queensland and found a red-bellied black snake had hitched a ride.

The man was bitten in the process of stopping the snake getting out of the box and escaping into busy Warringah Mall where the fruit shop is.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he is recovering.

Country Growers owner Sam Hamdan told the Manly Daily on Friday that his colleague was doing well despite the unusual encounter with the potentially deadly snake.

He said his colleague was a tough boy and he is slowly getting better.

"We were unpacking them (the eggplants) about 7am when he pulled one out and the snake was there," Mr Hamdan said.

"It tried to get away so he grabbed it but he was bitten in the process.

"We put it in a small box until the snake people came and took it away and released it into the bush."
