"OH HECK, it's up to my neck."

One poor possum didn't have a chance to yell if it could when its afternoon sleep in the hollow of a tree became a permanent one recently at Gunalda.

Photographer Jasmine Kerr captured the rare sight of a coastal carpet python digesting a possum in broad daylight on her mum's horse property Shabellah Lodge.

Jasmine's sister was the first to spot the incredible act of nature while the family transported horses in the float.

They stopped to take in the real life documentary unfolding before their eyes as the 4.5m snake - tail hooked into the hollow of a tree - hung upside down and swallowed the possum whole.

"I don't think anyone ever sees that," Ms Kerr said.

"We were all a bit gobsmacked; I definitely stood there for a few minutes before I took photos."

The Gunalda family first saw the sight when half of the possum was inside the python and the other half was outside.

As a snake owner and lover, Ms Kerr said the python would have spent 10 minutes strangling the possum before starting to eat it head-first.

"It was amazing. I feel sad for the possum, but it was spectacular to see a wild snake eat like that," she said. "He did look to be a very skinny snake in my opinion, so he was probably very hungry."

As the owner of a one-metre coastal carpet python herself, Ms Kerr said it was fascinating to see how big they got in the wild.

But Ms Kerr said she was not going to take menu tips from her pet's wild cousin and would stick to feeding her one-year-old reptile "little rats."
