Sofronoff to lead parole system review

FORMER solicitor-general Walter Sofronoff will lead a review into Queensland's parole system after a man on parole allegedly stabbed a Townsville grandmother to death.

Elizabeth Kippen, 81, was found stabbed to death in her home in July. Alleged killer Anthony O'Keefe, 32, has been charged with her murder and two counts of attempted murder for attacks on others. He had allegedly been released on parole that day.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the case had touched her and Queenslanders were demanding to know how it happened.

Mr Sofronoff has been asked to report to the government before the end of November.

"Mr Sofronoff is one of Queensland's, if not Australia's, leading legal experts. I have no doubt he will do a thorough, forensic examination of the state's parole system," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"Not only will he examine this particular case, but he will also examine the best practice in parole systems across Australia and New Zealand and seek input from organisations working with victims and offenders, as well as experts and researchers."

LNP Leader Tim Nicholls said the Opposition would consider supporting the review after it had considered the terms of reference.

"Well like everyone I think we were horrified by the death in Townsville. The terms of reference for the inquiry have only just been released. We'll have a look at those terms of reference but we will certainly support actions to ensure that dangerous criminals don't get back onto the streets earlier," he said.

"Certainly Walter Sofronoff is an experienced barrister and we certainly are keen to see those terms of reference. But the important thing here is not another inquiry. The important thing here is making sure that dangerous criminals aren't allowed back on the street." - ARM NEWSDESK
