Son accused of torturing mother in Toogoom

A 26-YEAR-OLD Toogoom man will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court today accused of torturing and assaulting his 52-year-old mother while holding her against her will in a bedroom of their family home.

Police allege the woman was held captive in the Toogoom home between Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.

She was allegedly severely beaten and assaulted with weapons, suffering a broken nose, shoulder and ribs as well as severe bruising before she was found when friends came to visit on New Year's Eve and police were alerted.

Detective Acting Sergeant Brett Everest said the motives behind the alleged crime were not yet known.

He said police were still investigating "the various types of methods that were used" to cause the alleged injuries.

A history of violence is not believed to exist between the man and his alleged victim.

Det Act Sgt Everest said it was a shocking incident.

"I think anything like this is shocking, it's certainly not something that we come across on a regular basis."

The man appeared briefly in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 2.

The case was adjourned and he was remanded in custody ahead of his court appearance in Hervey Bay today.
