Son of slain mum in court on murder charge

THE man charged with the "horrific" murder of his elderly mother had his matter heard in a Cairns court today.

However Woree man Sarde Reginald Mcfadzean did not appear in the dock of the Cairns Magistrates Court.

He has remained in the Cairns watch house since his arrest on Tuesday morning.

In a brief hearing Magistrate Trevor Black adjourned Mr Mcfadzean's matter until August.

"Given this court has no jurisdiction with respect to bail Mr Mcfadzean would be remanded in custody until 2.15pm on the 19th of August, his appearance will not be required," he said.

Mr Mcfadzean is accused of the brutal murder of a 76-year-old woman in her Woree home some time before 6.50am on Tuesday.

Heading up the probe into the woman's death Detective Inspector Jason Smith described the injuries inflicted upon the Woree retiree as "horrific".

"She has considerable head injuries and there is evidence of blunt force trauma," he said

"This is a distressing scene and the poor woman has suffered horrific injuries."

Police ruled out illicit drug use as a potential factor but said determining the mental state of the man would be part of the ongoing inquiry.

"It's all part of the inquiries; definitely as part of our investigation we will be looking at the history between these two parties, as well as anything that could have contributed to this horrible death," Det Insp Smith said.

"We are still piecing together what happened, we are looking for anyone who may have information about this tragic death … come and let us know."

Det Insp Smith said Mr Mcfadzean had not made any admission or confessed to the alleged murder.

No other orders were sought by the prosecution and a brief of evidence relating the alleged murder will be required by August 5.

The 43-year-old Mr Mcfadzean was remanded in custody at this morning's hearing.
