SS Dicky Moves after 122 years

Song of SS Dicky by can be bought as keepsake

AN acoustic guitar ballad which features in Sunshine Coast Council's Tide and Time - The SS Dicky story documentary can now be purchased online as a commemorative keepsake.

The SS Dicky song takes the wreck's history and legacy, combined with Andrew' Cooke's own memories, to produce a  reflective tribute to the story of the wreck.

A former Caloundra High School student and Wurtulla resident, Andrew is an award-winning singer-songwriter who grew up surfing and playing music on the Sunshine Coast from the early 80's.

He said the song was written in 2014 after a friend advised him about plans to move the SS Dicky off the beach.

"Finding out about the date of her removal and council's plans to make a documentary, I donated the song to the project," he said.

"Since I had grown up around Caloundra, I thought it would be nice to document this special occasion in film and song."

Andrew said he started by researching the SS Dicky's history and looking at past and current photos.

"I also asked friends for their memories and thoughts, as well as remembering my own experiences of the wreck," he said.

"The more I found out about the SS Dicky project, my own recollections have echoed a lot of similar thoughts from other locals and visitors of her.

"I surfed and spent time around the SS Dicky, even losing the nose of a surfboard as I pulled out a bit too close.

"I felt the song should be an acoustic ballad with a string backing, to highlight the strong emotional sentiment she has created in all who know her.

"I hope other SS Dicky fans enjoy the song as much I did producing it."

Copies of the SS Dicky DVD and song are available for purchase from council's library eShop.
