Man 50kmh over speed limit, three times over alcohol limit

A TIN Can Bay man was allegedly more than three times the legal alcohol limit when he was clocked doing 110kmh in a 60kmh zone in Hervey Bay on Sunday morning.

Police allege they caught the 31-year-old man doing 50kmh over the speed limit on Boat Harbour Dr, Scarness, at 12.30am.

When they intercepted the early 2000s model Hyundai Excel, the driver allegedly blew 0.159%.

He was arrested and charged and will appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

The incident comes just a week after police released the shocking results of statewide traffic operation Q-Blitz 2, which revealed that of 798 traffic offences detected in the Maryborough Police District in April, 750 were for speeding.

More than 400 of the speeding offences were picked up by mobile radars, while just over 300 were picked up by fixed speed cameras across the region.

There were 26 drink-drivers detected, including a driver with a reading of 0.273% - more than five times the limit - at Glenorchy north of Tiaro.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said the operation was aimed at combating an already horrific year on Queensland roads.

He said the road toll was sitting at 99 - 15 more than the same time last year.

"It is simply not acceptable for drivers to put their own lives and the lives of others at risk on the road."
