Split a sign govt failed: MP

THE splitting of Queensland Health into two entities is an admission of the State Government's failures and lack of ideas, Member for Bundaberg Jack Dempsey said yesterday.

Premier Anna Bligh announced the huge change yesterday, saying the alleged theft of more than $16 million by a staff member was the final chapter for the agency.

"Queenslanders can no longer tolerate the sick administrative performance of this mammoth organisation," she said.

"For some time now the administration of Queensland Health has been suffering because the current organisation is just too big."

From July 1 next year Queensland Health will be split into a Hospitals and Health Care Agency, to focus on the hospital system, and a Health Services Support Agency, providing services such as finance, human resources and technology.

Mr Dempsey said it should not have taken a huge fraud for the State Government to realise the system was not working.

"What Queensland Health needs is stability," he said.

"(The State Government) seems more interested in covering their own political survival."

The massive split will come at the same time as the health system is moved to a series of local networks run by a community board.

Mr Messenger said he did not think the split was going to be of "any benefit".

"It's a desperate attempt to appear as though they are doing something," he said.

Mr Messenger said he also wanted answers on how long the split was going to take and how much it would cost.

Federal Member for Hinkler Paul Neville said all the State Government was doing was making one dysfunctional entity into two.

"Public servants will end up taking the blame when it should be recognised the buck stops with the ministry," Mr Neville said.
