A TOOWOOMBA private hospital has secured a joint venture agreement with a Brisbane-based cardiology practice to deliver 24/7 interventional cardiac treatments to heart patients across the region.

St Vincent's Private Hospital Toowoomba and Brisbane based cardiology practice HeartCare Partners, part of the GenesisCare network, have finalised an partnership to provide new, invasive cardiology services, such as the insertion of pacemakers and stents.

Hospital CEO Kathryn McKeefry said the new cardiology service was an exciting addition to the hospital's services.

"HeartCare Partners is one of Queensland's largest private providers of cardiac care. They provide a comprehensive service that includes a large range of interventional procedures performed by renowned clinicians," she said.

"The St Vincent's service will commence with diagnostic angiography and will build up to include interventional services supported by on-site interventional cardiologists based in Toowoomba at St Vincent's.

"St Vincent's already has the region's only private 24 hour Emergency Centre to accept cardiac emergencies at any time of the day; but in the past, these patients have had to be transferred to another facility for invasive assessment and treatment.

"With the introduction of our new service, which will be phased in from early 2018, we will be able to admit these patients for full cardiac investigation thus saving vital time in arriving at a diagnosis and commencing the appropriate treatment."

HeartCare Partners cardiologist and Clinical Management Committee Chair Dr David Cross said that, once in full swing, the comprehensive on-site services will provide patients in the region with greater access to highly specialised interventional cardiologists.

"Timing is critical in heart care, so we are very pleased to be bringing a new on-site diagnostic angiography service to benefit patients at St Vincent's Private Hospital Toowoomba. In the future, my highly specialised interventional colleagues will also perform intricate procedures such as the insertion of pacemakers and stents. It is terrific to be working with St Vincent's to extend our high quality care in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, and we look forward to a long partnership," he said.

Essential to the delivery of the invasive service is the installation of a Cardiac Catheter Laboratory in the Hybrid theatre, along with a 16 bed cardiac ward, which is being built as part of the $30 million Clive Berghofer Theatre Suites.

Ms McKeefry said the introduction of the new invasive cardiology service, combined with the existing non-invasive cardiac testing and after-hours emergency services, will provide local cardiac patients with a comprehensive cardiac service that is second to none.

This complements the hospital's recently launched full-time Rehabilitation service and expanded General Medical Services.
