STAYING hydrated in hot working conditions is a concern for a huge amount of people in Gladstone, particularly in industry.
Formerly a mechanical fitter, Richard Nizielski knows all about how hard it can be.
"I was a tradesman, so I understand the lifestyle and the limitations," he said.
But he went on to be an Olympic speed skater at three Winter Olympics for the Australian team, where he really found out about how much hydration plays a part in the body's performance.
He now coaches other athletes on nutrition and hydration, as well as giving seminars to help workers understand how to properly look after their body.
"It can improve productivity at work and in everyday lifestyle," Mr Nizielski said.
"There are also the issues of OH&S in workplaces."
Giving a few lucky individuals a look at all of the factors at a workshop held at Down to Earth Results last week, Mr Nizielski was happy to part with some tips for the rest of the region as well.
- Regularly intake hydration fluids before you are thirsty
- Check your urine colour; it should be a light straw colour
- Have a balanced intake; we get 20% of fluid from food we eat, so get to love fresh fruit and vegetables
- Avoid hydration drinks with high sugar content, the sugar burns fluid to process
- Consume 500ml of water before sleep, 500ml in the morning and 600mL before exercise or work
