IT ONLY took thieves 13 minutes to steal David Springer's boat and trailer he left on Booral Rd, after it ripped off the car.

Last Saturday the Urangan resident was taking his grandson fishing at River Heads when the tow ball tongue fell off his Mazda, leaving the boat sliding along the road.

Mr Springer parked the boat trailer on the side of the road while he went home to change cars to retrieve the boat, but when he returned it was gone.

It only took opportunist thieves 13 minutes to hitch Mr Springer's second-hand Quintrex tinny onto the back of their car and drive away.

"It was five minutes to my place, three minutes to get the new car and five to get back," he said.

"Only the tongue and the tow ball was left on the corner of Round Island Rd.

"I can't believe what people do - mongrels."

The construction industry employee is now $2000 out of pocket for the boat, which was not insured.

"We only had it for a week and it sat in the yard the whole time so we were getting round to insurance for everything on the weekend," Mr Springer said.

Along with the boat, Mr Springer's new fishing rods and gear inside the boat are also missing.

He has now bought another small boat to take his 12-year-old grandson fishing.
