Stoner fights the pain for fourth

DEFENDING MotoGP champion Casey Stoner has ridden through the pain of a fractured ankle and ligament damage to finish fourth in the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The Australian suffered the injuries in a crash during qualifying, and said he was disappointed not to have finished on the podium.

"The painkillers I took to dull the pain gradually wore off at around the halfway point. At the end of the race it was almost impossible to maintain the pace, " Stoner said.

The race was taken out by Dani Pedrosa with championship leader Jorge Lorenzo second and Andrea Davizioso third.

Lorenzo now leads by 18 points from Pedrosa with Stoner a further 21 points back in third place.
