Stosur muscles up as Aussies fire in Fed Cup


AUSTRALIA is into the semi-finals of the Fed Cup for the first time in 21 years after thrashing an under-strength Russia 4-0 in Hobart yesterday.

Samantha Stosur (pictured) beat world No. 158 Victoria Kan 6-2 6-3 in the first of the reverse singles before Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty completed the rout in the doubles, beating the Russian pair of Khromacheva and Solovyeva 6-1 6-3.

The other reverse singles match between Dellacqua and Veronika Kudermetova was not played.

Australia last played a Fed Cup semi-final in 1993, accounting for Argentina before going down to Spain in the final.

The Aussies will now meet either Germany or Slovakia in April, the Germans holding a 2-0 lead in their tie in Bratislava.

The win is Australia's first over Russia since 1983 as they eye a first Fed Cup victory in 40 years.
