World champion boxer Katsidis to fight drug charges

TOOWOOMBA boxer Michael Katsidis has found himself with a different fight on his hands after being charged with two drug-related charges.

The 33-year-old took time out from training for his next fight to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday on charges of unlawful possession of a restricted drug and possessing dangerous drugs.

He stood beside his solicitor Damien Alroe who asked the court for an adjournment so he could make a submission to the police.

It is believed a police search of a Toowoomba City home on May 1 found six prescription tablets for which the boxer did not have a prescription.

However, The Chronicle has been told the tablets did not belong to Katsidis and Mr Alroe had obtained a statement from the owner of the tablets who does have a prescription for the medication.

It is believed the medication concerned is intended to help those prescribed the drug to sleep.

Katsidis was not required to enter any pleas to the two charges and said nothing during the brief mention of the matters. Magistrate Bruce Schemioneck acceded to Mr Alroe's request and remanded Katsidis on bail and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on July 1 by which time it was envisaged Mr Alroe's submission would have been considered by police.

Katsidis, a former interim world champion, is due to fight former British champion Graham Earl at Toowoomba's Rumours International on July 4.
