Taking it easy in Ipswich

QUEENSLAND'S best-kept secret is the provincial city of Ipswich.

Just 30 minutes from Brisbane, Ipswich is also Queensland's oldest provincial city.

This historic centre offers visitors plenty to see and do, be it exploring some of the country's finest examples of domestic architecture with houses dating back to the 1800s, wandering through the award-winning Workshops Rail Museum (the birthplace of Queensland Rail), visiting the Ipswich Art Gallery, or visiting more than 500 parks, wineries, cafes and restaurants.

Ipswich is also known for its local art and craft cottage industries, with art galleries, markets and craft and antique stores centrally located as well as being scattered in the many beautiful townships that dot the surrounding countryside.

And when in Ipswich, Metro Hotel Ipswich International is the ideal place to stay.

Rated four and half stars, the hotel is boutique in size but equipped with all the facilities of a much larger hotel.

This seven-storey hotel is only three years old and overlooks parklands, offering more than 90 luxury rooms including nine one-bedroom serviced apartments, two spa suites and 84 single/double deluxe rooms.

To tempt travellers to plan an Ipswich stopover, the hotel is offering a stopover package at $99 per room per night with a continental breakfast for two, free car parking and a late checkout.

The hotel will even provide two special travel mugs filled with tea or coffee to send you on your way.

Hotel general manager Alex van Kersen said the package was designed for travellers who either regularly drove through Ipswich or who were considering a stop on their way to Toowoomba or the Gold Coast to break their journey.

"Ipswich is indeed a hidden gem, often missed in the rush to get to another destination in Queensland when in fact people will enjoy the journey more if they take the time to stop and soak in some of the wonderful atmosphere of this historical city," he said.

"The package is worth $219 but we have priced it so people can enjoy everything our city has to offer in the comfort of a four-and-a-half star hotel which offers all the luxuries of a big city hotel but with a distinctly boutique feel. "

Enjoy a meal at the hotel's signature restaurant Platform 9 which was awarded a 2008 Business Achiever Award for Formal Dining. To book, call the toll-free reservations line on 1800 004 321 or the property direct on 3812 8077.
