Technology advances lead to review of Triple Zero system

THE days of simply dialing Triple Zero (000) are on the way out as technology helps those less geographically minded.

Technologies have come a long way since Triple Zero (000) was established in 1961.

Triple Zero is a 'voice only' service, but today mobile phones, text messaging, email and smartphone apps dominate the communications landscape.

That's why the Australian Government is reviewing the operation of the national Triple Zero operator. The review will explore how the service can respond to new technologies and changing community expectations.

For instance, the recently launched Emergency + Smartphone App, which displays the phone's GPS coordinates for the caller to read out to the emergency operator is a great example of how modern technology can be used to improve the Triple Zero service.

Recently, when a 27-year old woman was bitten by a snake while running, she downloaded the Emergency+ app so she could pinpoint her location to receive medical attention as soon as possible.

Go to www.communications.gov.au/triplezeroreview and complete the online form or quick survey to have your say on the future of Triple Zero.
