Teed up for charity

LENNEY Forbes has put his hand up to be ugly – but not in the usual sense of the word.

The Clermont bartender has entered this year’s U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year competition and has been raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland.

Lenney is hoping to take out the U.G.L.Y. title, which stands for Understanding, Generous, Likable You, and is for those who have a passion for bartending and a strong community spirit.

Lenney is just one of many bartenders from around the Central Highlands who have entered this year and are fundraising for patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

While he has had plenty of experience fundraising and volunteering his services for the community, Lenney said it was the first year he had heard of the U.G.L.Y. competition.

Lenney said he had always enjoyed lending a hand to the community, but that he also had personal reasons for entering the competition this year.

“My mum’s been through cancer herself and she had all her lymph nodes removed,” he said.

“And we’ve had people in our family die of cancer before.”

Lenney said it was because of these reasons he tried to help out as much as he could.

“I just hope it makes someone’s life better,” he said.

“I’ve put down $1000 as my goal but if we donate more that’s a bonus.”

Lenney works at the Clermont Golf Club and will be hosting a Charity Golf Fun Day tomorrow as his major fundraising event.

“It’s going to be a really fun golf day and it’s also open to non-golfers,” he said.

Businesses have sponsored the event and will be providing prizes on the day.

The four-person Ambrose event will see locals tee-off at 1pm for nine holes of fun.

Lenney has until June 16 to raise funds before sending in his final amount to the Leukaemia Foundation and the winner will be announced on June 21.

The U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the year will be awarded a trophy to display behind the bar and a celebration event to the value of $1500 to thank the regulars who support their fundraising.

To enter a team into the Charity Golf Fun Day, contact Lenney on 0448 244 487. Cost is $40 per team.
