Police launch probe after teen girl shot 'by accident'

A 17-YEAR-OLD girl was accidentally shot on a private property at Devereux Creek on Saturday night, police have confirmed.

She was transported to the Mackay Base Hospital by ambulance crews with injuries to her hand and leg.

She was in a stable condition on Sunday morning.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman yesterday confirmed it was an "accidental discharge of a firearm" but said police were still investigating the circumstances around the incident.

The call to emergency services came in about 6.50pm Saturday.

The spokeswoman said they believed there was "no criminality involved, with the firearm being moved from one point to another point" at the time the gun went off.

It's believed the teenager was a visitor to the property.

The police spokeswoman was unable to release the location of the property the incident occurred at, as there were only a small number of properties in the Devereux Creek area.

There were reports that the girl's boyfriend may have been the one moving the firearm at the time, however this could not be confirmed by police.
