Teen motocross star, Joel Dinsdale, critical after car crash

PROMISING young Mackay motocross star Joel Dinsdale is in a critical condition in Townsville General Hospital after he was involved a single-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway just north of St Lawrence.

The 17-year-old was the sole occupant of a twin-cab ute that struck a tree early yesterday morning.

It is believed Mr Dinsdale was on his way to Brisbane to compete when the crash occurred.

An RACQ-CQ Rescue spokeswoman said he had leg injuries and suspected spinal and internal injuries.

He was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by emergency services crews, the spokeswoman said.

Emergency crews worked to stabilise him at the scene of the crash, she said.

Mr Dinsdale was then airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital about 9.20am before being transferred to Townsville in a critical condition.

A hospital spokeswoman said last night he remained in a critical but stable condition.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the crash happened about 2km north of St Lawrence and investigations were ongoing.

Road Accident Action Group co-ordinator Graeme Ransley described the crash as "absolutely disappointing".

He said it was a huge blow during Central Region Road Safety Week.

Mr Dinsdale has been riding motorcycles since he was two years old and was regarded as a standout junior racer in Australia.

Last year Mr Dinsdale competed in his first season of under-19s motocross, which was his first year of professional racing.

He claimed the number two place at the Yamaha Queensland Motocross Championships, held in Townsville in July last year.

He also won his division on the endurance track at the inaugural Steve Dinsdale Memorial weekend at Koumala last year, which was named in memory of his father.

Steve Dinsdale was a state champion rider who died suddenly in 2011.
