Teen charged for skate park drive

A TEENAGER drove his father's car on to a Sunshine Coast skate park last week, police said yesterday.

The 17-year-old P-plate driver from North Arm, south of Eumundi, was charged on Monday afternoon for the stunt at Alexandra Headland last week.

A four-wheel-drive was driven into the park about 10pm last Tuesday and attempted to drive up a “funbox”, a central table surrounded by ramps and transition pieces.

About 30 skaters were on the part at the time.

A video of the incident, captured by shocked onlookers, generated a huge response on social networking site Facebook after it was posted on the Daily's website.

Police found the teenager at a North Arm address and he was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and wilful damage. He will appear in court on March 3.

The arrest is the second in as many days for police relating to the Coast's Australia Day offences which made headlines across the state.

Five-year-old George Storie's cochlear implant and prescription glasses were in a bag stolen from a crowded Mooloolaba Beach on Australia Day.

An 18-year-old Deception Bay man was charged with stealing on Sunday.

Maroochydore police station officer in charge Joe Jaramazovic said the incidents had generated broad public interest. “It is always great when members of the public take the initiative to assist police...” he said.
