WHEN it comes to their chocolate indulgence, Ipswich sweet tooths selecting their Easter treats are increasingly leaning towards the dark side.

Gala Fine Chocolates and Gifts owner Debbi Engler stocks sugary creations from Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand at her Orion Springfield store.

She said increasingly chocolatiers were making dark chocolate part of their product range.

“People really seem to like the dark,” Ms Engler said.

“They think it is a little bit more healthy and it is not as sweet.

“It also has more antioxidants.”

Ms Engler said the shift towards dark chocolate wasn't just contained to older connoisseurs.

“It is across the board,” she said.

“I have been surprised at the numbers of younger people who come in looking for dark.”

In America the desire for dark chocolate options has led companies such as Mars to offer dark chocolate covered peanut M&M's and Nestle to offer products including its dark chocolate collection.

Studies have shown that eating chocolate, primarily dark chocolate, may contribute to improved cardiovascular health as it is said to reduce blood pressure in individuals with high blood pressure.

As Easter draws ever closer Ms Engler said the popularity of dark chocolate was catching up to traditional selections.

“Generally people go down the line of milk chocolate, but there are more dark chocolate options now, such as rocky road,” she said.

“It is definitely more in demand.”
