The show set to save the day for one home owner at a time

MANY hands made light work in this past week's return of Selling Houses Australia. Foxtel's popular renovation-for-profit series is back on our screens for its 10th season and Wednesday's milestone 100th episode featured a special project for the Salvation Army.

Host Andrew Winter, interior designer Shaynna Blaze and landscape designer Charlie Albone were joined by volunteers eager to give back to the charity. The team's stunning renovation of a 100-year-old Sydney home, purchased by the Salvation Army's then General William Bramwell Booth in 1920, raised $2.27 million for the Salvos' social services.

And to top things off, the sparkling heritage home went to a local family. I just hope they can afford those mortgage repayments, yikes.

Selling Houses is Foxtel's answer to The Block, but rather than putting eager contestants through their paces the series comes to the aid of home owners struggling to sell.

The reasons are varied, but even when it's a serious of bad or ill-advised decisions the Selling Houses team still comes to the rescue.

"We do houses worth $200,000 and houses worth $4m; we cover all bases,” he says.

What I love about Selling Houses is the experts - Andrew, Charlie and Shaynna - put their experience to good use by getting their hands dirty during the renovations and sales campaign.

There are no clumsy paintwork or dodgy DIY jobs here; this is practical advice you can use to make a real difference to your bottom line.

Of course Selling Houses and The Block have something else, or perhaps I should say someone, in common - Shaynna.

She and Charlie are unique to the Australian format. The British series, which Andrew fronted in 2002 before migrating down under, focused more on the selling process than renovation.

"When the production came over to Australia, we didn't go 'We'll do exactly the same as the format says'. We tweaked it substantially from day one. We went straight in and we did it differently,” Andrew says.

The 10th season continues next week with a renovation of a family home on the Gold Coast.

Selling Houses Australia airs Wednesdays at 7.30pm (Qld), 8.30pm (NSW) on The LifeStyle Channel.
