‘The show will not go on’ in wet conditions

THE Killarney Show has been cancelled for 2015, with organisers deeming the grounds dangerous for competitors. It's the second time the show has been cancelled, due to wet conditions, in three years. Show secretary Maurice Thomson said with today's weather forecast there was no point in continuing.

"It's just too unsafe for competitors and animals," he said.

"They say if you want to make it rain you stage the Killarney Show.

"But of course we are happy to see the rain."

Mr Thomson said despite the conditions yesterday, they had successful prime cattle and working dog trial competitions.

"We were down in numbers but that's to be expected with the weather," he said.

"Some people were saying we had better fat cattle than the Ekka though.

"You could also say we've had to axe our axemen in the wood chop," he joked.

Mr Thomson said when the Killarney Show was cancelled in 2013 they went on to have a successful mid-year campdraft.

"It's too early to say if we will move events to another weekend," he said.

According to Weatherzone the Southern Downs will receive between 20 and 40mm today with showers clearing tomorrow.

At the time of printing last night, Warwick had received 24mm in the last 24 hour period. Queen Mary Falls recorded 62mm from 9am to 7pm yesterday.

Southern Downs Regional Council's disaster co-ordinator Peter See said the SES had a stockpile of sandbags. "There is currently no flooding in any of our area, but the situation remains unknown," he said.
