Thieves bring forklift but ATM won’t budge

AN attempted early-morning heist at a shopping complex in Redbank Plains was an epic failure for burglars who used a stolen forklift while trying to make off with an ATM machine.

Thieves broke into a nearby landscaping business - Sapar Landscaping Supplies - at 1.40am on Saturday to steal the forklift.

The vehicle was then driven to Kruger Village Shopping Centre and used to smash through the window of an unoccupied shop where an ATM was mounted.

The intruders apparently tried to tear the machine from its mountings, attaching heavy chains to the forklift, but were unsuccessful and left on foot empty handed. They left behind a damaged wall at a neighbouring laundromat and a damaged awning at the shopping centre.

Sapar Landscaping Supplies employee Glen Abbott said the forklift had been recovered and was undamaged.

He said the thieves had, however, broken the business's gate, as they had used the forklift to ram through it.

"I've worked here for 12 years and never experienced anything like this," he said.

"We've been here all morning to repair the fence. It was a mess."

Mr Abbott suggested the council should consider installing bollards at the centre to deter further ram-raid incidents

Police are encouraging anyone who saw or heard four men acting suspiciously in the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
