Thieves dump 'too heavy' safe in middle of town

A HEAVY safe was found abandoned in a Clifton street this morning after being stolen from a Heritage Bank mini-branch.

Clifton police officer-in-charge Sergeant Guy Smidt said someone broke a lock on the front door of the Clifton Newsagency before entering the bank mini-branch office inside the King St business.

"They have used a fridge trolley to remove it," Sgt Smidt said.

"It has become too heavy and awkward for the offenders to manage and was subsequently discarded."

The safe was found on the Clifton Leyburn Rd unopened about 75m away from the newsagency.

A forklift was used to get it back to the mini branch.

The break in was believed to have occurred some time between 1am and 4am.

Sgt Smidt said police had some strong leads on the case and was confident an arrest would be made.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
