Thousands of gamers play Pokemon, at once

A SOCIAL experiment on the popular gaming site Twitch.com has seen up to hundreds of thousands of people controlling the same game of Pokemon at the same time.

Twitch.com users log in to a live broadcast of a modified version of Nintendo's Pokemon Red and submit which button they'd like to press via the livestream's chat in an attempt to control the games character, Red.

The kicker is that tens of thousands of other users are all submitting button presses at the same time, resulting in the game's character behaving erratically.

Somehow, despite this, the community playing the game has managed to complete more than half of the game.

More interestingly is the culture that's emerged out of the attempt.

  • A religion based on a helix fossil item
  • An over-exercised pidgeon nicknamed 'Bird Jesus'
  • An ongoing struggle between anarchy and democracy
  • An unhealthy fascination with tickets
  • A rat with an addiction to shovels
  • A false prophet born of a misclick
  • A community-wide terror of PCs
