Three women arrested after synthetic drugs operation

POLICE have executed raids in Mackay and Bowen as part of an ongoing operation focused on the sale of synthetic drugs in regional communities.

State Crime Command's Synthetic Drug Operations Unit officers commenced Operation North Hiking in December 2015 and focused on the sale of synthetic drugs through tobacco shops, adult shops and alternative herbal outlets.

In early March, following confirmation an adult shop in Mackay was selling classified synthetic drugs, police executed a search warrant at the shop as well as a residential address in North Mackay.

Police located packets of synthetic cannabinoids featuring the logo "lucky eight", documentation, computers and mobile phones.

A 50-year-old woman was charged with trafficking and supplying dangerous drugs.

She will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on April 7.

On March 13, police executed a search warrant at an adult shop in Bowen.

Police located several packets of synthetic majority labelled as "Novelty's Collector's Item".

A 47-year-old woman was charged with three counts of supply dangerous drug. She will appear in Bowen Magistrates Court on April 5.

Police also executed a search warrant at a Bowen home and charged a 43-year-old woman with seven counts trafficking dangerous drugs.

She will appear in Bowen Magistrates Court on April 5.

Police from State Crime Command received assistance from officers from Bowen CIB, Airlie Beach police and Mackay Tactical Crime Squad.

"The message has been clear for some time now, these synthetic drugs are neither legal nor are they safe," Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker of the Drug and Serious Crime Group said.

"We have recently closed an operation where we found these drugs being mixed in cement mixers in very unhygienic conditions. These drugs are being mixed with products you would find at your local hardware store and without any care for the end result.

"Retail outlets need to be aware that we will continue to target you and if you are found selling these items we will charge not only you, but anyone in the outlet found to be selling the products."
