SUPERMAXIS Wild Oats XI and Investec Loyal are gripped in a titanic battle for victory in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

The yachts have exchanged the lead a number of times as they race down the coast.

Overnight, Investec Loyal surprised the fleet by edging past Wild Oats XI, taking the lead from its main rival for the first time since the starters guns sounded in Sydney.

But Wild Oats XI took back the front-runners position this morning and the scene is set for a thrilling finish into Hobart.

Fellow supermaxi Lahana is third, trailing behind by more than 60 nautical miles.

Seven yachts have withdrawn from this year's race, including 2003 line honors winner Wild Thing, which had to retire due to damage to its sail.

The leaders are expected to finish sometime this evening.
