Friends happy to share the stage again as Wicked witches

FOUR years after its debut, Wicked the Musical is returning to Brisbane.

The Tony Award-winning musical, based on the characters from Gregory Maguire's twist on L Frank Baum's literary classic The Wizard of Oz, is back on Australian stages for a national tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of the show's Broadway debut.

The tour reunites co-stars Jemma Rix and Helpmann Award-winner Lucy Durack, whose portrayals of young witches Elphaba and Glinda shot them to stardom.

"When Lucy and I finished together in Perth, I was heading off with the show to Singapore and she went off to do Legally Blonde," Rix told APN.

"It was very emotional and sad. I love working with her and I honestly thought I wouldn't do this show with her again. She brings out the best in me with her talent."

Steve Danielsen is a newcomer to the show, taking on the role of playboy student Fiyero.

It's Danielsen's first lead musical theatre role. In contrast, veteran entertainer Reg Livermore will take up the role of The Wizard in his first stage role in four years.

"It's really nice to have the combination of the new cast members and the oldies," Rix said.

"I feel like the new ones get something from us and we get something from them. It balances out the show and makes it better."

Wicked's original Queensland opening night in 2011 was cancelled because of the Brisbane floods.

The show's costumes and set pieces narrowly escaped damage from floodwaters at Southbank.

"I hope we get to actually have an opening," Rix said.

"It really was a horrible time for all the people in Brisbane to deal with. It was definitely a very scary time. Hopefully it will be much more smooth sailing for everybody this time."

Tickets go on sale at 9am today for the show's Brisbane season.

"Wicked probably won't be back again in Australia for a very long time," Rix said.

"When we were in Brisbane last time we were there for a very limited time because of the floods.

"For people who missed out I hope they come along and watch it this time."

Tickets are on sale from 9am through www.wickedthemusical.com.au.

Wicked opens at QPAC's Lyric Theatre on February 14, 2015.
