League of Legends game tipped to be fiery affair

FORMER Dragons flier Nathan Blacklock says he expects tomorrow's Legends of League match at Stockland Sunshine Coast Stadium to very quickly escalate into a fiery affair.

Blacklock will line up for the New South Wales Legends alongside players such as Matt Geyer, David Peachey, Scott Hill and Greg Florimo against their Queensland counterparts in the charity match.

Since retiring in 2006, Blacklock has thrown on the boots for similar matches on a handful of occasions.

He says they have always followed the same pattern - they start out at half-pace but passions soon came to the fore.

"I muck around a bit nowadays, but these games are good - you get to catch up with the boys," he said.

"It's an environment that's not too serious but you still have that Queensland-New South Wales rivalry and drama behind it.

"Don't get me wrong, it's going to pick up to 90, 95% intensity. After a while you say, 'let's give it to these guys'.

"But it's just good fun."

Players began filing on to the Coast yesterday for the clash.

Blacklock, former New Zealand winger Sean Hoppe, ex-Parramatta and Broncos centre Stuart Kelly and foundation Bronco Craig Teevan made a series of stops across Nambour.

After visiting Nambour General Hospital, the legends stopped into the Nambour rugby league club, where they presented one of the club's juniors, Jai Kapernick, with a ball signed by the NRL Indigenous All Stars.

Jai has been on the comeback trail since breaking his leg last year.

The gift was presented to him on behalf of the Arthur Beetson Foundation.

Since stepping away from football, Blacklock has pursued his passion of working with at-risk indigenous youth.

"I've got a mentoring program - I deal with under-privileged kids," he said.

"I work to keep kids in school, give them other life options.

"I love doing it. I get a good feeling doing it. It's a feel-good job and I get to change kids' lives."

Tomorrow's legends match will be preceded by local league matches between the Bribie Island Sea Eagles and the Nambour Crushers across three grades.
