Titans staring at wooden spoon

GOLD Coast Titans are the front-runners to win the wooden spoon in this year's NRL competition, but that doesn't mean they have given up.

Fans are hurting after seeing their team lose 12 out of 16 games this season and placed last on the ladder despite reaching the final four last year.

Bond University assistant professor of sports psychology Dr Clive Jones said the players would be under incredible pressure to perform.

“The goal is to keep task-focused,” Dr Jones said.

“The short-term goal of each game, even the short-term goal of each tackle count, becomes important.”

And Titans coach John Cartwright obviously agrees.

“I haven't really got a goal for the end of the year,” Mr Cartwright told the Daily News yesterday.

“It's to get ourselves in form and win as many games as we possibly can; the goal at the moment is to beat the Broncos.”

The Titans will face Brisbane – currently in fifth place – in round 19 this Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.

“Morale's good,” he said. “It's never perfect when you are sitting where we are on the table.”

The Titans have only scored 229 points this season and had 376 scored against them – a negative difference of 147 points.

Sports Bet have the Titans as favourites for the wooden spoon. And it looks like a safe bet at $1.75.

“I can't complain,” said Mr Cartwright.

“They're training very hard, they are putting in when a player needs to put his hand up for accountability.

“That's what gives us faith, that we are going to finish this year on a high.”
