SIXTEEN-year-old Mollie Maher loves whipping up an entree and plating a main, but her passion is delectable desserts.
She wants to create towering butter cream wedding cakes for blushing brides, or serve up elegant a la carte desserts complete with fancy toffee trimmings at a five-star restaurant.
The Maroochydore State High School student and part-time apprentice chef is well on her way to achieving her dreams.
Mollie has been named the Sunshine Coast's School-Based Apprentice of the Year.
She also added another gong to her trophy cabinet by winning the Acclaim Young Apprentice of the Year Outstanding Achievement Award for Queensland.
Mollie said cheffing was the only thing she had ever wanted to do. "I've wanted to be a chef since I was old enough to lift a wooden spoon," she said.
"When I found out about the nomination for the Young Apprentice of the Year with Acclaim I had a real feeling of appreciation.
"Acclaim nominated me and my executive chef also nominated me for the award. It meant my chef had recognised the extra hours I put in and the effort."
Mollie has worked as an apprentice chef at Twin Waters Novotel Resort two days a week since March.
"For almost eight months I have had no social life," she said.
"I am in Year 11 at Maroochydore State High so I study Monday to Friday and then I work at Twin Waters every Saturday and Sunday. It is a lot of fun but also really busy."
Mollie said her dreams for the future were now bigger than ever.
"I'd love to be a pastry chef," she said.
"I will finish my cheffing qualifications and then branch out into pastries. Wedding cakes or elegant desserts are what I want to do as a career."
