FORMER Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been asked about a heated mid-air confrontation with Malcolm Turnbull in 2014, saying 'I didn't talk about it then and I'm certainly not going to talk about it now'.

The Daily Telegraph today revealed Mr Turnbull fronted Mr Abbott following an event in Sydney, labelling him a "disloyal c***" and giving a blunt assessment of his first 10-months as prime minister.

Speaking on 2GB this morning Mr Abbott said Daily Telegraph National Political Editor Sharri Markson, who broke the story, was a "fine journalist" but said he would not be drawn on the specifics of the incident on board the a VIP plane.

"Malcolm and I go back a long long way and there have been a number of milestones in our relationship, some good and some not so good"," Mr Abbott said.

When asked whether Mr Turnbull used vulgar language, Mr Abbott sidestepped the question. "I'm not going to go into the precise terminology that people use on different occasions."

Mr Abbott did however say that most senior politicians use robust language on occasion.

Earlier this morning, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop denied she had witnessed the confrontation. She said the relationship between Mr Abbott and Mr Turnbull was "tense".
