TOM Cruise must be feeling the need, the need to join his wing men for a Top Gun sequel that is.
That's right, while out promoting his Mission Impossible return, Cruise has confirmed he is in talks with Top Gun director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to play Maverick in a follow-up to the 1986 blockbuster.
In an interview with MTV News in Dubai, Cruise said he would be a part of a Top Gun comeback provided the makers "find a story that [they] all want to do".
Cruise said he did not know what role he would play, but online rumours suggest his character would be a mentor to a new wave of up-and-coming fighter pilots.
"I hope we can figure this out to do it again," he said in the interview.
"Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas and I thought, wow, that would be what we could do now," he continued.
"We all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot Top Gun."
Following reports students were paid to greet him on a recent trip to India, we must ask: is his ego writing checks his body can no longer cash? No, we don't think so, but it was still nice to get that quote in.
The original Top Gun will be re-released in 3D in cinemas next year.
