THREE years ago, Melissa Homan was overweight and facing frightening health problems.

Now, at age 57, instead of feeling constantly tired, she is filled with pride at what she's been able to achieve.

Not only has she lost nearly 40kg, sculpted her muscles, reversed her health problems and improved her fitness, her outlook on life has been transformed.

She developed so much confidence she put herself on the stage in a body building competition.

"I had been diagnosed with a fatty liver, was pre-diabetic, cholesterol was 7.1 and was about to commence on anti-hypertensive medication," she said.

"Now I have no signs of a fatty liver, no longer pre-diabetic, cholesterol is 4.1 and BP 100/60 with a resting pulse at 56-58 beats per minute.

"The thing I love most about my (before and after) photos is my facial expressions speak volumes."

Personal trainer Leon Stensholm said he watched Ms Homan's confidence and self esteem transform along with her body during the past three years.

"She'll walk into my gym with a smile ear to ear, whereas go back a couple of years and it was still at the grinding stages," he said.

"Now there's a glow. Every time I see her she just has the constant smile on her face."

The Warana trainer said while it was his job to help his clients improve their bodies it was rewarding to so often see an improvement in their overall well-being.

"To take them from being down and overweight to the top of the podium - it's very humbling," he said.

STRUTTING IT: Three year's later Melissa Homan has dropped nearly 40kg and sculpted her body; she's proud to show it off on stage.

For Ms Homan, he said, it was a process of slowly burning off weight in a consistent way, with a plan for effective workouts and maintaining the gains, and her age worked to her advantage.

"My best clients and the ones that actually look the best and get the best results are 45 and up," Mr Stensholm said.

"They're at an age where they know what they want.

"The older generation are much more disciplined."
