Trickster scammers stealing under the noses of cashiers

SCAMMERS are using deception to steal money from businesses without cashiers noticing, Sunshine Coast police have warned.

A bold group of scammers are targeting businesses in person at the cash register, Senior Constable Ann Jessop said.

"Currently, there appears to be a group operating across South East Queensland targeting businesses with a distinctive MO," Snr Const Jessop said.

"One person will present a quantity of $100 dollar bills and request notes of smaller denominations.

"While the cashier is counting out the notes, they will change their minds a number of times to confuse or fluster the cashier and covertly pocket a quantity of the cash before cancelling the transaction and asking for their original notes back."

Snr Const Jessop said there have been at least 17 reported offences in the last four days along the South East coast, and warned businesses to be vigilant at their cash registers.

Businesses have been urged to report any transactions of this nature immediately to police.
