Truckies prove their worth

THEY command the giants of our roads, and Raymond Barrie and Richard Knight have proven they are the safest heavy haulage operators in Australia.

The experienced trucking duo took out the top gong at the BP Australian Tanker Driving Championships in Brisbane at the weekend after completing a series of safety skills tests and manoeuvres against competitors from around the country and New Zealand.

From resuscitating an unconscious woman to estimating speeds under a police escort, fighting fires in less than a minute to navigating an intricate obstacle course, Raymond and Richard proved they were the best in the business and a credit to the industry.

“We do most of these things every day on the road so winning the competition was good to know we do the right thing daily,” Raymond, 33, said, who has been a truck driver since he was 18.

The winning duo’s boss Greg Haylock from Emerald Carrying Company nominated the drivers for the competition, and said the business was “incredibly proud” of their achievement.

Raymond and Richard took home $5000 and a medallion, and haven’t ruled out asking their boss for a pay rise.
