IRENE Bell realised the almost hallowed status of Milton's XXXX brewery for Brisbane people when it was recently falsely suggested it faced closure.
The Lion executive says union claims that the 140-year-old brewery could be shuttered led to a spike in beer sales as patriotic Queenslanders became concerned they might lose their favourite locally brewed tipple.
Lion, the parent company of XXXX, is committed to the site, she says, denying United Voice's claim that it was looking to exit or downsize the factory.
Milton's 145 workers still produce 200 million litres of beer each year, including XXXX, James Squire, Tooheys and Hahn, across a 24-hour, five-day-a-week operation.
