LISTEN: Union to fight BHP Billiton over tugboat job losses

MARITIME Union of Australia state secretary Bob Carnegie has vowed to fight BHP Billiton following the decision to award Rivtow Marine the contract to operate its tugboat fleet at Hay Point from July 1.

The move was confirmed this afternoon, and will see about 22 jobs lost from current tugboat operator Teekay Marine.

"We will be fighting. We will haunt BMA until BMA sees sense," Mr Carnegie said.

"By the time we are finished, BMA's name will appropriately be dirt."

But BMA Asset President Rag Udd said the contract was awarded to Rivtow following a competitive tender process based on the key areas to BMA's business of high safety standards, operational efficiency and effective cost management criteria.

The contract would last three years starting July 1 with two options for additional single year contract extensions.

In announcing Rivtow as the new towage services operator, Mr Udd acknowledged outgoing provider Teekay Marine.

"I'd like to thank Teekay and their employees for their service to the users of Hay Point over the years,'' Mr Udd said.
