TV celebrity chefs forced out of kitchen and into court

FORMER My Kitchen Rules contestant David Vu has faced court today on drug charges.

The cooking show star pleaded guilty to possessing a prohibited drug in Sydney Downing Centre Local Court this morning.

He appeared briefly in court looking nervous as his solicitor Robert Daoud addressed the court entering a plea of guilty to on his client's behalf to possessing 0.46g of a drug, which was not identified in court.

"I am instructed that my client does not use drugs," Mr Daoud told the court.

Vu has agreed to undertake a merit assessment program and will go before the court again in September.

The 32-year-old appeared with friend Betty Banks on Channel 7's hit cooking show in the last season narrowly missing out on the grand final.

The pair wowed the judges with their Asian inspired dishes with Vu drawing inspiration from his parents who came to Australia as refugees from Vietnam with judges Manu Feildel and Pete Evans describing the pair's take on Asian cuisine as the "Betty and David twist".

The Punchbowl celebrity chef appears in court on the same day as the show's main rival MasterChef cooking judge George Calombaris is expected to be sentenced for assaulting a football fan at the A-League grand final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory in Sydney.

Calombaris, 38, was supporting Melbourne Victory, which lost the game, at Allianz Staduim in May when he began arguing with a fan.

Calombaris has entered a plea of guilty.
