Tweed man Russell Johnstone shot dead in Tingalpa street

AN outpouring of tributes has followed the shooting death of 24-year-old Russell Johnstone from Tweed Heads.

Mr Johnstone was shot in Tingalpa, Queensland, on February 6 and died at Princess Alexandra Hospital on Monday.

A major murder investigation has been launched by Cleveland police to find out the circumstances surrounding his death.

Mr Johnstone's Facebook page has been flooded with comments from devastated friends and family supporting each other through the difficult time.

"Rest in paradise brother," one man wrote.

"You know how much I respected you and loved you; we have always had a lot of love for each other for the 13 years we knew each other."

The messages were poignant and moving, with many in the Tweed Aboriginal community reeling from the death.

"Today our world was shattered, you were taken from our lives too soon big Russell Johnstone and my heart is absolutely broken," a woman wrote.

Other Facebook pages based across the Tweed region mirrored the sentiments.

Queensland Police responded to reports of shots fired in Jarrow St about 3.30am last Thursday, arriving at the scene to find Mr Johnstone lying on the road, suffering gunshot wounds.

A crime scene was set up in the street, with uniformed officers, detectives, scientific and crime scene officers all attending
